Οταν ο Κλάπτον το 'σκασε από την Ελλάδα
Ο θεός της κιθάρας περιγράφει το περιπετειώδες πέρασμά του από την Αθήνα του 1965 στο βιβλίο του «Clapton: The Autobiography». Είχε παίξει και με το ελληνικό γκρουπ «Juniors» ξεσηκώνοντας τον κόσμο
Πόσοι άραγε ξέρουν ή θυμούνται τις πρώτες εμφανίσεις του Ερικ Κλάπτον στην Ελλάδα του 1965 και ότι ο θρύλος του ροκ είχε παίξει με ένα ελληνικό συγκρότημα, τους Juniors; Ελάχιστοι. Να, όμως, που ο «θεός της κιθάρας» στο βιβλίο του «Clapton: The Autobiography» (εκδόσεις Broadway Books) περιγράφει την ελληνική του περιπέτεια με λεπτομέρειες. Μέχρι σήμερα είχαμε τις μαρτυρίες των μελών του γκρουπ του και του Μάκη Σαλιάρη, ντράμερ τότε των Juniors, που δημοσιεύτηκαν στο μουσικό περιοδικό «ΖΟΟ», τον Μάιο του 1997.

«Το μεσοκαλόκαιρο του 1965, έξι από εμάς, αποφασίσαμε αυθόρμητα να φτιάξουμε μια μπάντα και να γυρίσουμε τον κόσμο με αυτοκίνητο, χρηματοδοτώντας το ταξίδι δίνοντας συναυλίες καθ' οδόν.
Ονομάσαμε το συγκρότημα Glands (*1). Ο John Bailey έκανε τα φωνητικά, ο Bernie Greenwood ήταν στο σαξόφωνο, ο Jake Milton στα ντραμς, ο Ben Palmer έπαιζε πιάνο και στο μπάσο είχαμε τον Bob Rae. Ο Bernie είχε ένα MGA το οποίο ανταλλάξαμε για ένα αμερικάνικο Ford Galaxy stationwagon για τη μεταφορά μας. Εγώ είχα εξοικονομήσει μερικές εκατοντάδες στερλίνες και αγόρασα έναν ενισχυτή και δύο κιθάρες.
Την κοπάνησα από Μάγιαλ
Αν ληφθεί υπόψη ότι εγώ ήμουν, υποτίθεται, αυτός που τραβούσε την προσοχή στους Bluesbreakers, θα μπορούσε να πει κάποιος ότι ήταν ανεύθυνο από μεριάς μου να την κοπανήσω έτσι. Το μόνο που είπα στον John (Mayall) ήταν ότι θα έλειπα για λίγο. Πραγματικά τον άφησα στα κρύα του λουτρού και αναγκάστηκε να ψάξει ανάμεσα σε αρκετούς κιθαρίστες ώστε να καλύψει το κενό όσο θα έλειπα.
Αφού στριμωχτήκαμε και οι έξι στο Ford Galaxy ξεκινήσαμε τον Αύγουστο, διασχίζοντας τη Γαλλία και το Βέλγιο, με σκοπό να συνεχίσουμε ώσπου να βρούμε κάπου να παίξουμε. Δεν είχαμε ιδέα τι κάναμε, πιστεύοντας ότι κατά κάποιον τρόπο θα μας χαμογελούσε η τύχη καθώς ταξιδεύαμε. Το ταξίδι μας παραλίγο να τελειώσει πριν καν αρχίσει. Φθάσαμε στο Μόναχο, ενώ το φημισμένο φεστιβάλ μπίρας ήταν σε εξέλιξη. Βρισκόμασταν σ' ένα κιόσκι πίνοντας μπίρες, όταν ο Bob Rae είχε την φαεινή ιδέα να ανάψει το τσιγάρο του με ένα χαρτονόμισμα των πέντε λιρών. Αυτό προκάλεσε μεγάλο καβγά με ένα άλλο μέλος του γκρουπ που θεώρησε υπερβολική μια τέτοια χειρονομία και ήρθε η ρήξη. Καταλήξαμε να ξεφορτώσουμε όλον τον εξοπλισμό από το αυτοκίνητο και στην ομόφωνη απόφαση να επιστρέψουμε στην Αγγλία. Το επόμενο πρωί τα ξαναβρήκαμε. Ξαναφορτώσαμε το Ford και πήραμε πάλι τον δρόμο.
Ωμό κρέας Θεσσαλονίκης
Οδηγώντας μέσω Γιουγκοσλαβίας, σ' ένα λιθόστρωτο δρόμο ανάμεσα στο Ζάγκρεμπ και το Βελιγράδι, το αυτοκίνητο έτρεμε τόσο πολύ που στο τέλος διαλύθηκε. Το σασί κυριολεκτικά ξεκόλλησε. Αναγκαστήκαμε να το δέσουμε γύρω και κάτω από το αμάξι με σκοινί. Ετσι λοιπόν, τώρα ταξιδεύαμε έξι άνθρωποι μαζί με όλο τον εξοπλισμό μας σε ένα αυτοκίνητο που το συγκρατούσε ένα κομμάτι σκοινί! Οταν τελικά μπήκαμε στην Ελλάδα και φτάσαμε στη Θεσσαλονίκη ήμασταν τόσο πεινασμένοι, επειδή δεν είχαμε φάει τίποτα τόσες μέρες, που φάγαμε ωμό κρέας από έναν χασάπη...
Συνεχίζοντας, φτάσαμε στην Αθήνα και πιάσαμε δουλειά σ' ένα κλαμπ που λεγόταν Igloo. Ονομαζόταν έτσι επειδή το εσωτερικό του είχε σχεδιαστεί να μοιάζει με παγωμένη καλύβα. Είχε ένα μόνιμο γκρουπ, τους Juniors, και ο μάνατζέρ τους χρειαζόταν άλλο ένα γκρουπ για support, επειδή το πρόγραμμά τους ξεκινούσε στις 7 το απόγευμα και τραβούσε μέχρι τις 2 ή 3 το πρωί.
Πιάσαμε δουλειά στο Igloo
Ο John Bailey κατάφερε τον τύπο να μας προσλάβει. Βρήκαμε ένα δωμάτιο στον τελευταίο όροφο, που το νοίκιαζε ένας Αιγύπτιος συνταγματάρχης. Με ενθουσίασε το σπίτι και πολύ σύντομα άρχισα να το απολαμβάνω. Το πρόγραμμα αποτελείτο από εμάς, να παίζουμε τρία σετ κάθε μέρα, μαζί με τους Juniors που έπαιζαν τραγούδια των Beatles και των Kinks. Μιας και δεν τα ξέρανε τα κομμάτια καλά, τους βοηθούσαμε λιγάκι. Δυο βράδια αργότερα οι Juniors είχαν ένα τροχαίο δυστύχημα, και δυο από αυτούς σκοτώθηκαν επί τόπου. (*2) Το επόμενο πρωί, πίναμε καφέ στο κλαμπ, όταν ο μάνατζερ όρμησε μέσα κι άρχισε να ουρλιάζει το όνομα Θάνος, του κιμπορντίστα, με τον οποίο ήταν προφανώς ερωτευμένος και ήταν ένας από τους δύο που είχαν σκοτωθεί. Ούρλιαζε Θάνο-Θάνο-Θάνο και μετά άρχισε να πετάει ποτήρια στον καθρέφτη πίσω από το μπαρ. Κάποιος μας είπε ότι θα ήταν καλύτερα να βγούμε έξω, έτσι λοιπόν φύγαμε κι αυτός τα έκανε όλα λίμπα.
Το κλαμπ έκλεισε για δύο μέρες και μας συμβούλεψαν να παραμείνουμε, διότι θα βρισκόταν κάποια λύση. Επισκεύασαν το κλαμπ και κάποιος που εκπροσωπούσε τον πληγωμένο μάνατζερ με πλησίασε λέγοντάς μου ότι ήταν να βάλουν πάλι μπροστά το μαγαζί κι ότι με ήθελαν να παίξω με τους Juniors. Ετσι πριν το καταλάβω καλά καλά βρέθηκα να παίζω ένα σετ μαζί τους, ένα σετ με το δικό μου γκρουπ, μετά ένα σετ μαζί τους κ.ο.κ έως ότου κατέληξα να παίζω έξι ώρες ασταμάτητα.
Μπροστά σε 10.000 άτομα
Μετά από κάποιες μέρες, οι Juniors ξαφνικά την κοπάνησαν. Ηξερα όλα τα τραγούδια που ήθελαν να παίξω και φαίνεται ότι είχα συμβάλει στο γκρουπ με κάτι που δεν είχαν πριν. Και πριν το καταλάβω, βρεθήκαμε να παίζουμε στον Πειραιά μπροστά σε 10.000 άτομα. (*3) Χαιρόμουνα που μπορούσα να βοηθήσω τους Juniors ν' αποκτήσουν ένα μεγαλύτερο κοινό, αλλά αυτό με γύρναγε πίσω, στον κόσμο της ποπ, που είχα προσπαθήσει να αφήσω πίσω μου. Ηταν σαν deja vu.
Στο μεταξύ οι Glands είχαν μπουχτίσει και τρώγονταν να φύγουν. Οταν είπα στον ντράμερ των Juniors ότι σκεφτόμουν να φύγω μου είπε: «Καλύτερα όχι, ο μάνατζερ θα σε κυνηγήσει αν προσπαθήσεις να φύγεις και θα σου κόψει τα χέρια». (*4) Μου έδωσε την εντύπωση ότι δεν αστειευόταν κι έτσι καταστρώσαμε ένα σχέδιο διαφυγής. Ο Ben έβγαλε κρυφά εισιτήρια για το τρένο, ενώ οι υπόλοιποι μάζεψαν τα πράγματά τους ώστε να είναι έτοιμοι να φύγουν. Ενα απόγευμα εμφανίστηκα, όπως συνήθως, για πρόβα με τους Juniors, αλλά είχαμε κανονίσει να περιμένει ένα αυτοκίνητο από την άλλη πλευρά του κτιρίου. Μόλις δόθηκε το σινιάλο, είπα ότι πήγαινα τουαλέτα, βγήκα από την μπροστινή πόρτα, μπήκα στο αυτοκίνητο και πήγα κατευθείαν στο σταθμό, όπου μαζί με τον Ben πήραμε το τρένο για το Λονδίνο αφήνοντας τους Juniors σύξυλους. Ο ντράμερ των Juniors ήταν αυτός που μας βοήθησε και βασικά του χρωστάω τα χέρια μου. Σ' ευχαριστώ, μάγκα μου, δεν θα μπορέσω ποτέ να σε ξεπληρώσω...
Αφησα πίσω μου μια ωραία Gibson Les Paul και ένα ενισχυτή Marshall. (*5) Τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά συνέχισαν ανά τον κόσμο, αν και ένας θεός ξέρει πώς ακούγονταν χωρίς κιθάρα και πιάνο. Επιστρέφοντας στην Αγγλία, τέλος Οκτωβρίου 1965, ανακάλυψα ότι τη θέση μου στους Bluesbreakers είχε καλύψει ένας λαμπρός κιθαρίστας ονόματι Peter Green, αργότερα μέλος των Fleetwood Mac...»

*2. Το πολύνεκρο δυστύχημα έγινε τη Δευτέρα 18 Οκτωβρίου 1965, στη Νέα Φιλαδέλφεια. Νεκροί ήταν ο Θάνος Σουγιούλ, 22 ετών, η μνηστή του Νανά Μπενέτου, 18, ο Γιάννης και η σύζυγός του Ελένη Κρασούδη, 28 και 20 αντίστοιχα. Βαριά τραυματισμένος ανασύρθηκε ο κιθαρίστας Αλέκος Καρακαντάς, 19 ετών.
*3. Η συναυλία έγινε τη Δευτέρα 25 Οκτωβρίου στον κινηματογράφο «Τερψιθέα» της Νίκαιας.
*4. Ο ντράμερ των Junior ήταν ο Μάκης Σαλιάρης.
*5. Στις 28 Οκτωβρίου, ο Bernie Greenwood έστειλε επιστολή στον Μάκη Σαλιάρη, που του ζητούσε να πουλήσει τον ενισχυτή και να στείλει τα χρήματα στον Eric Clapton.

«Εκανε την Gibson να κελαηδά»
«Δεν είναι εύκολο να ξεχάσει κανείς μια από τις πιο συναρπαστικές εποχές της ζωής του...
Και εκείνη η εποχή, Οκτώβριος του '65, ήταν ξεχωριστή για μένα. Ημουν αραχτός στο γραφείο του ιδιοκτήτη του Igloo, όταν πέρασαν την είσοδο του μαγαζιού κάποιοι Εγγλέζοι μουσικοί, ζητώντας δουλειά σε καθημερινή βάση. Οταν ο ιδιοκτήτης τούς ζήτησε να παίξουν για να κρίνει αν του κάνουν, αυτοί έφεραν τα όργανά τους και τα 'στησαν, έχοντας όμως ένα μικρό πρόβλημα: δεν είχαν ντράμερ! Τους την κοπάνησε με μια κοπέλα στο Πρίντεζι... Τότε προσφέρθηκα εγώ να συμπληρώσω το γκρουπ τους. Faces ήταν τ' όνομά τους, και ξεκινήσαμε. Το σχήμα άρεσε κι αρχίσαμε τις πρόβες στο σπίτι που είχα τότε στην οδό Πιπίνου. Δέσαμε περίφημα, η ανταπόκριση που είχαμε στον κόσμο ήταν μεγάλη. Μεγάλος όμως ήταν κι ο κιθαρίστας του συγκροτήματος. Ηταν ο Eric Clapton!
Αγνωστος τότε στην Ελλάδα, ωστόσο 6 μήνες νωρίτερα είχε μια μεγάλη επιτυχία με τους Yardbirds, το «For your love». Καθαρόαιμος μπλουζίστας, εγκατέλειψε τους Yardbirds τότε, διότι ξέφευγαν από τον blues προσανατολισμό τους για πιο ποπ πράγματα... Στο Igloo ήταν ο αρχηγός, όπως ήταν φυσικό, των Faces. Δεν το έπαιζε όμως αρχηγός, ήταν πολύ συνεσταλμένος, εγκρατής και σοβαρός. Αλλά όταν έπιανε στα χέρια του την Gibson, την έκανε να κελαηδά. Είχα πάθει πλάκα! Οπως πλάκα είχε πάθει κι ο κόσμος που τον έβλεπε κάθε βράδυ. Χαμός έγινε και στη συναυλία που δόθηκε εις μνήμην του Σουγιούλ, που είχε σκοτωθεί εκείνες τις μέρες σε τροχαίο. Υστερα από αυτό έφυγαν από την Ελλάδα και η μόνη επαφή που είχα έκτοτε μαζί τους ήταν μια επιστολή που μου έστειλε ο Bernie Greenwood, ζητώντας να πουλήσουμε τον ενισχυτή του Clapton και να του στείλουμε τα χρήματα».

PS: The only photos from Clapton's journey in Greece with his Beano taken the first on 17 Oct 1965 and the second around that time also. Clapton, keeping his shows with his group the "Glands", was also replacing the Greek group's "JUNIORS" guitarist that was severly injured in a car accident one week before i.e. on 10 Oct 1965. In that accident the Juniors' leader and keyboardist was killed. That's why the singer wears that black strap on his arm.

The midsummer of 1965, six of us, we decided spontaneously to form a band and turn the world by car, financing the trip by giving concerts en route.
We named the band Glands (*1). The John Bailey did the vocals, Bernie Greenwood was on the saxophone, the Jake Milton on drums, Ben Palmer played the piano and on bass we had Bob Rae. The Bernie had an MGA which is exchanged for an American Ford Galaxy stationwagon to carry us. I had saved a few hundred pounds and bought an amplifier and two guitars.
I went from John Mayall
Considering that I was supposedly the one who attracted the attention of the Bluesbreakers, could say that was irresponsible on my part so I went to. The only thing I told John (Mayall) was that I was away for awhile. Really let him out in the cold and was forced to search among several guitarists to fill the gap as I was away.
Once cornered, and six in the Ford Galaxy began in August, across France and Belgium, to continue until we find somewhere to play. We had no idea what we were, thinking that somehow we smiled luck as you travel. Our trip almost ended before it even started. We arrived in Munich and the famous beer festival was in progress. We were in a pavilion while sipping beers, when Bob Rae had the bright idea to light a cigarette with a five pound note. This caused a big altercation with another member of the group felt that such an extreme gesture and it's broken. We came to unload all the equipment from the car and the unanimous decision to return to England. The next morning morning. Reload the Ford and took the road again.

Driving through Yugoslavia, into a paved road between Zagreb and Belgrade, the car was shaking so much that in the end fell apart. The chassis literally plucked. Forced to tie around and underneath the car with a rope. So, now six people traveling together with all our equipment in a car in a restrained piece of rope! When finally we went to Greece and arrived in Greece we were so hungry, because we had not eaten anything so days, we ate raw meat from a butcher ...
Moving on, we arrived in Athens and we got a job in a club called Igloo. So named because its interior was designed to resemble ice hut. He had a permanent group, the Juniors, and their manager need another group for support, because their program began at 7 pm and pulled by 2 or 3 in the morning.

The club was closed for two days and advised us to stay because it was a solution. Repaired the club and some representing the wounded manager approached me telling me that it was put back in front of the store and that they wanted to play for the Juniors. Meanwhile Glands were fed up and eaten to leave. When I told the drummer Juniors I thought to leave he said: "Better not, the manager will chase you if you try to go and cut your hands' . (*4) He gave me the impression that there was joking and so a plan of escape. The Ben secretly took tickets for the train, while others packed their bags to be ready to leave. One afternoon I appeared, as usual, to rehearse with the Juniors, but we can arrange a car waiting on the other side of the building. Once given the signal, I said go toilet, I went through the front door, I entered the car and went straight to the station, where he and Ben got the train to London leaving Juniors syxylous.
